Generations Podcast
Project Description:
Generations delves into the defining places, communities, and experiences of contemporary queer culture in New York City. This sound walk and podcast episode features three distinct stories from Carolyn (she/her), Sean (he/him), and Sam (they/them), along with contributions from anonymous participants and archival footage from the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress. It highlights how these New Yorkers have formed bonds and grown within queer communities over the past sixty years, focusing on the queer hub of the West Village. By examining relationship dynamics, reflecting on cultural influences, and sharing initial explorations of queer spaces, Generations aims to deepen the understanding of the queer experience through contextualizing in New York City.
Challenges:
Weaving together multiple narratives while balancing personal stories, anonymous voices, and archival materials into a cohesive and emotionally resonant sound walk was the driving motivation and challenge. Ensuring respectful and accurate representation of diverse queer identities and experiences across different time periods required thoughtful editing and sensitivity with consistent consultation with our interviewees during the post-production process.
Outcome:
The Sound Walk Episode was selected for inclusion on WNSR live radio network, May 2024.
